Blackpool's world famous illuminations are set to light up the north west as the annual light show returns to the coast once again.

Millions of visitors are expected to descend on the town for the 'greatest free light show on earth' with more than six miles of lights set to stretch along the Promenade.

From Friday, the seaside resort will be lit up for an impressive 66 night until early November in a long-running attraction that has been dazzling visitors since 1879.

With the clock ticking until the lights get turned on, here's everything you need to know about Blackpool Illuminations.

When is the Blackpool Illuminations switch on?

A special event held from 4pm on Friday, August 30 at Tower Festival Headland will kick off the illuminations.

The Blackpool Introduces concert will run from 5.30pm-9pm and the big switch on itself will be at 9pm-9.15pm.

The event will finish at 10pm. Last entry is 8.30pm.

Blackpool Illuminations dates and times

The show will run from Friday, August 30 until Sunday, November 3.

Timings will vary throughout the year. The illuminations begin at 9.15pm tonight until 2am Saturday morning.

From September 1 until September 12 the display will be on from 8pm until 10.30pm midweek, 12am on Fridays and Saturdays and 11pm on Sundays.

The display will be switched on earlier each week until Sunday, October 27 when the lights get turned on at 5pm.

Will I need tickets?

To guarantee your place at the big switch on event tomorrow evening, you can buy VIP tickets online which cost £73 for adults.

The VIP package includes access to a marquee, a welcome drink, picnic bag and after party access.

Unfortunately Golden Circle tickets have already sold out. Registration for free tickets closed in July.

Who is switching on the lights?

Coronation Street's Lucy Fallon (better known for her stint on the ITV show as Bethany Platt) will pull the famous switch in front of around 20,000 people tonight.

Boy-band Busted and Britain's Got Talent winners Diversity, along with Sigma, Club MTV DJs R3wire & Varsk, and Nina Nesbitt, will also join the launch event line-up.

What other attractions will there be?

From October 11-26, the award-winning Lightpool Festival will entertain the crowds with live performance and light-based art installations, while the town is also hosting the annual World Fireworks Championships from the North Pier between September 6 and 27.

Other displays include Carnival of the Lights, Adonias, Carnival Magic, Wave-Field and Gaia, along with illuminated tram tours and a design competition.
