A nine-year-old boy has died after being “struck by lightning” during a football session.

The boy was hit shortly after 5pm on Tuesday at the Common Edge Road area of Blackpool while taking part in a private caching session, the BBC reported.

Police officers and emergency services attended the scene, and the boy was taken to hospital.

However, he died a short time later.

Spirit of Youth Junior FC club secretary Daniel Pack told the BBC three teams had been due to train this evening but the sessions were cancelled due to the storm.

"The whole committee is devastated and our thoughts are with the boy's family and the coach," he said.

The boy’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Detective Superintendent Nick Connaughton of Lancashire Police said: “This is a truly devastating incident and our thoughts are wholeheartedly with the family and friends of the young boy, who has passed away, at this very sad and distressing time.”

Road closures in place following the incident have now been lifted.

Anybody with information about the incident, or who witnessed it and has not yet spoken to police is asked to get in touch on 101, quoting log 1169 of May 11.
