Blair faces 'nail-biting' Iraq vote

12 April 2012

The Prime Minister could face a "nail-biting" vote on Iraq in the Commons on Tuesday, it has been claimed.

MPs will be debating a motion sponsored by the Scottish Nationalist Party and Plaid Cymru, calling for a full review by seven MPs who are Privy Councillors into the way the Government's responsibilities were discharged in relation to Iraq during the period before military action and its aftermath.

The Scottish Nationalists say they are expecting at least 30 rebel Labour MPs to support the motion at the end of a half-day debate.

Alex Salmond, Leader of the SNP, said: "If the motion were to be carried the Prime Minister's tenure in office, would be measured in hours and days rather than in weeks or months.

"But even if the Government wins it by a narrow margin - which I think is the reality - then he would be in a Neville Chamberlain situation where you win the battle but lose the war.

"This is an opoportunity for the House of Commons to bring to account a Government which has led us into this bloody quagmire."

Another SNP MP Angus MacNeil (Western Islesa) said: "This will be a nail-biting vote for the Prime Minister."

But even though the motion has all-party support, it is expected that the Government will survive the threat.
