Newlyweds Boris and Carrie Johnson and his wife spent two nights away at an undisclosed location to mark their big day, according to Downing Street.

Although the No 10 spokesman would not reveal where the couple went on their mini-honeymoon, he did, however, confirm that the Prime Minister was now "back at work” and that he paid for the whole wedding himself.

The spokesman also told reporters: “The PM spent Sunday and Monday away but is now back working from Downing Street.”

Asked where Mr Johnson travelled, he said: “It is a personal matter so I won't be getting into any further detail,” the Daily Mail reported.

The paper also alleged that the couple had actually escaped to Chequers, a retreat in Buckinghamshire, for their short-lived get-away.

But this claim is yet to be confirmed.

The speculation comes just days after the prime minister and Carrie Johnson - formerly referred to as Miss Symonds - married in secret on Saturday in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral.

Mr Johnson was the first prime minister to get married while in office in nearly 200 years, with 30 guests invited to the ceremony at short notice.

Downing Street said the couple would celebrate again with family and friends next summer, with a longer honeymoon also delayed until then, reported the BBC.

One of the first jobs for the new Mrs Johnson will be hosting the spouses of political leaders when they gather in Cornwall for the G7 Summit later this month.

But despite the positive news, many wondered and asked how it was possible for Mr Johnson to re-marry - given his previous divorces.

But it was revealed that the Roman Catholic Church can allow divorcees to remarry if the previous marriages were outside the Roman Catholic Church.
