A six-year-old boy has been knocked down and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

The incident happened in Fishpond Lane, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, at around 12.20pm on Saturday.

West Yorkshire Police said the boy was a pedestrian and was struck by a grey or light-coloured small hatchback-type car which failed to stop.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Bottomley, of the force's homicide and major inquiry team, said: "This is a tragic incident which has devastated the boy's family.

"At this stage we believe the driver is a young white male and the vehicle is likely to have front-end damage as a result of the collision."

A heart-breaking note left at the scene where the child was hit said: "To mummy and daddy's little soldier, forever in our hearts, love u always."

Well-wishers have left flowers, soft toys and notes by the side of the road where the tragedy occurred.

Police said the boy's identity would not be released until Monday.
