Boy sorry after stabbing woman

12 April 2012

A seven-year-old boy who stabbed a woman as she fought with his mother has said he was sorry.

The boy was at home in Norris Green, Liverpool, when his mother began fighting with her friend, Sara Corran.

He ran to the kitchen and grabbed a carving knife before stabbing Ms Corran in the buttock, leg and arm. She was taken to hospital for treatment to multiple stab wounds, which were not life-threatening.

The boy was interviewed by Merseyside Police but not arrested as he is below the age of criminal responsibility. He returned home on Friday and was later driven away without his mother. He left the terraced house with a coat over his head to avoid photographers.

Earlier, he and his mother told ITV Granada Reports they were sorry for what had happened. He said: "I ran into the kitchen where the roasting knives was, and I got a knife and I stabbed her in the bum." Asked if he would do it again, the boy replied: "No. I would phone the police and say there's been a fight."

His mother, who was visibly upset, said: "He must have a lot of anger in him. I know he probably didn't know what he was doing at the time, because he was frightened, but I don't know what made him think of the knife."

The incident took place on Ashbank Road, Norris Green, at 8.15pm on Thursday.

Neighbour Maureen McGee said the boy did not have a reputation as a tearaway. She said: "He is a mischievous little boy, like all young lads. He plays outside a lot and he's had my flowers up before, but he's not a bad lad or a wild child. He's a nice little lad but I think ... he's seen the red mist and tried to protect his mum."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "The investigation is ongoing, and we will be working with other appropriate agencies."

A spokesman for Social Services said they were working with partner agencies regarding the incident.
