Murdered pro-EU MP Jo Cox would have remained optimistic despite Britain voting to quit the union, her husband has said.

The mother-of-two was gunned down outside a local constituency meeting near Leeds in the build-up to the referendum.

And despite her campaigning for Britain to remain in the EU, the Labour MP's husband Brendan said she would have stayed positive after last night's vote.

He wrote on Twitter this morning: “Today Jo would have remained optimistic and focused on what she could do to bring our country back together and around our best values.”

Flowers, letters and picture of Jo Cox were placed in tribute outside Batley polling station yesterday.

Her husband and two children travelled down the Thames on their houseboat for a memorial service on Wednesday in Trafalgar Square, which would have been her 42nd birthday.
