Britain braced for more storms

12 April 2012

Britain was bracing itself for a second wave of gale force winds and heavy rain on Sunday after a stormy night.

Severe weather warnings were issued for almost every part of the British Isles as high winds were expected to hit exposed coastal and hilly areas.

Forecasters said further structural damage, localised flooding and other disruption was likely in many places.

The sudden storms were caused by a deep depression moving across the UK from the Atlantic, bringing with it up to 75mm of rain.

Conditions may ease briefly on Sunday before conditions worsen again, particularly in Western Scotland and Northern Ireland, said MeteoGroup forecaster Stephen Davenport.

Central parts of England may be hit by the strongest winds, coming from the west and south west.

"These gusts could reach 70 or 80mph on Sunday night. It's pretty nasty stuff," said Nikki Berry, also a MeteoGroup forecaster.

Many parts of Britain were lashed by showers and strong winds overnight as the first wave of gales swept across the country.

Winds of up to 90mph were recorded off the the Isles of Scilly, with gusts of 50mph to 60mph recorded inland.

Forecasters said between 25 and 50mm of rain could fall over the next few days, with up to 75mm possible in total. This, in addition to the rain that has fallen over the past week, could result in some flooding.
