British actors have got off to a flying start at the Golden Globes ceremony in Beverly Hills, with Dame Helen Mirren, Hugh Laurie, Jeremy Irons and Emily Blunt all picking up awards.

Laurie won the gong for best actor in a TV drama for his portrayal of cantankerous Dr Gregory House in medical drama House.

Irons picked up the award for supporting actor in a TV series, miniseries or movie for Elizabeth I, in which he played the Earl of Leicester.

And Blunt's role in BBC drama Gideon's Daughter earned her the honour for best supporting actress in a series or film in the small screen.

Dame Helen picked up her first Globe of the night for the title role in Elizabeth I, made by Channel 4 and HBO Films.

It also received the gong for miniseries or film for TV.

Dame Helen said she was "incredibly honoured" with her award.

"Elizabeth I would have an amazing speech at this point, wouldn't she?," she said.

"I have nothing to say except thank you very much."

The Queen, about the Royal Family's reaction to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and also starring Dame Helen, won its first award of the ceremony when Peter Morgan picked up the gong for best screenplay.

"What do we have to do to get our leaders to listen to us?" he asked.

"What do we have to do to get them to change tack?

"In 1997 2.2 million people went on the streets of London, sleeping rough, bringing the biggest city in Europe to a standstill, so that a stubborn 70-year-old lady would fly from Aberdeen to London.

"What are we going to have to do when it's really important?"

Thanking star Dame Helen, he added: "You have to believe that public protest counts for something; in this case it did."
