Britons cleared of killing Cypriot

12 April 2012

Two British tourists have been cleared of killing a Cypriot teenager and injuring his friend after a fracas outside a nightclub.

Michael Binnington, 21, and Luke Atkinson, 22, from Witham, Essex, were acquitted of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm at a court in Larnaca.

They had denied conspiring to ram the teenagers' motorbike with their rented car in the Cypriot resort of Protaras in August.

Christos Papiris, 17, died in the crash, while driver Marios Demetriou, also 17, survived with serious injuries.

Police escorted Mr Binnington and Mr Atkinson out of court after relatives of the two teenagers, angered with the decision, scuffled with officers and shouted at judges.

A third Briton, Julian Harrington, 39, also of Witham, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Papiris at a hearing in November.

In a majority decision, the three-member court said the prosecution had failed to prove there had been a common purpose between the two and Harrington to harm the motorcyclists.
