Two thirds of British workers would prefer to start and finish their working day earlier than the typical 9am to 5pm shift, according to a new YouGov poll.

YouGov's survey of nearly 2,000 people found starting at 8am and finishing at 4pm was the most popular alternative.

It was chosen by 25 per cent of respondents.

Another 13 per cent said they would prefer to start work at 8.30am and finish at 4.20pm, while only one in ten of those surveyed said 7am to 3pm would be their preferred working hours.

Younger workers were relatively keener on late starts with a fifth of 18 to 24-year-olds saying they wanted to start work after 9am.

Just 14 per cent of those surveyed said they would happily stick to the traditional 9am to 5pm.

The polling firm said preferences did not seem to vary based on whether respondents had children to collect from school - although Londoners were found to lean more towards a later start time.

YouGov says this is likely related to the desire to avoid "rush hour" on busy London public transport systems.

They said location appeared to be one of the most important factors in determining working hours preferences, with half as many northerners opting for a later start time.

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics suggests that one in ten British workers believe they are "overemployed" - working more hours than they want to.
