Busy and overworked Londoners 'take the fewest holidays'

Londoners take the fewest holidays out of all UK residents, according to a study.

A quarter of people in the capital only go abroad every three years, the research found.

Busy lifestyles and work commitments were among the top reasons why people living in London had failed to take an overseas break, rather that lack of funds to do so.

The research found 25 per cent of Londoners surveyed said it was three or more years since their last holiday abroad.

London was only beaten to the top spot by Wales, where 33 per cent of those surveyed had not left the country for the same length of time.

Other regions in the top five also included Yorkshire and Humberside [16 per cent], the North West [13 per cent] and the West Midlands [nine per cent].

People taking part in the research were also asked to explain why they had failed to go overseas for such a long period of time, with 41 per cent of the 2,906 people surveyed blaming busy lifestyle and work commitments.

Other reasons included not being able to afford a holiday [32 per cent], raising a family [15 per cent] and a fear of flying [6 per cent].

While only three per cent of survey respondents they did not think not having a holiday affected them, 55 per cent said they felt “worn out” due to their lack of break.

Chris Clarkson, managing director of sunshine.co.uk, said: “Those in Wales and London - and indeed all of the regions in the top five - should put a plan of action in place to ensure they get the break abroad that they deserve.

“Whether that means being more dedicated to saving those pennies or learning to say no and delegating more at work to be able to have the time off.”
