Captain Sir Tom Moore has said that while Christmas may be different this year, things “will get better”.

The Second World war veteran captured the hearts of the nation when he raised nearly £33 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden, for which he was knighted by the Queen in July.

He told BBC Breakfast: “We have always had all of the family around us and we’ve all had a lovely Christmas lunch, with turkey and all the little bits that go with it.

“And that’s always been a joy.”

Captain Sir Tom added: “And for the children, this year of course with things as they are, it can’t be quite the same for everyone.

“But things will get better and next year, we’ll be alright.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also shared messages of hope for a “better 2021” on Christmas Day.

“This Christmas our thoughts are with those of you who are spending today alone, those of you who are mourning the loss of a loved one, and those of you on the frontline who are still mustering the energy to put your own lives on hold to look after the rest of us,” said Prince William and Kate Middleton on Twitter.

“Wishing a merry Christmas doesn’t feel right this year, so instead we’re wishing for a better 2021.

Captain Sir Tom recently released his autobiography, Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day, a book charting his incredible fundraising effort that captured the hearts and minds of the nation.
