Carillion axes hundreds more jobs after collapse of construction giant

Construction giant Carillion has slashed 452 more jobs following the collapse of the firm.

The losses are on top of 377 announced on Friday.

The jobs cover a variety of roles connected to both private and public contacts across the country, insolvency service the Official Receiver said.

A further 100 jobs linked to public sector contracts have been safeguarded, according to receiver.

In statement, it added: "We appreciate this will be a difficult time for those who have lost their jobs.

"Jobcentre Plus' Rapid Response Service stands ready to support any of these employees by providing advice and information so people can move into a new job as quickly as possible. People who have been made redundant will also be entitled to make a claim for statutory redundancy payments.

"Our efforts are focused on the smooth transfer of Carillion's contracts to new providers and we will continue to keep Carillion's workforce updated as these arrangements are finalised."

Business Secretary Greg Clark said last week that the British Business Bank will support high street lenders to give loans to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and individuals owed money by the failed outsourcing giant.

The move comes after three high street banks agreed to provide "tailored support" worth almost £250 million to those facing a hit from the company's collapse.

Carillion owed huge sums when it went into liquidation in January, putting thousands of jobs at risk.

On Friday it was announced that 377 Carillion staff would be made redundant, although 919 had been saved as new employers took on their contracts.
