Convicted rapist Ched Evans was today reported to be set to return to professional football after agreeing a contract with Oldham Athletic.

The former Sheffield United striker was poised to join the League One club on a two-and-a-half year deal worth between £1,500 and £2,500-a-week, according to club sources.

The move for the 26-year-old comes despite MPs, police and 60,000 people signing a petition opposing his return.

Evans was released from prison last October half way through a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman. An appeal against Evans’s conviction was rejected by three judges at the Court of Appeal in 2012. His case is due to be looked at by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
