Crimes by freed inmates up by 39%

12 April 2012

The number of new offences committed by criminals freed early from jail has risen by more than a third.

Government figures showed 244 crimes had been alleged against inmates freed early under emergency measures between June and the end of November.

It was a 39% increase on the total a month earlier.

The total number of prisoners freed up to 18 days early now stands at about 13,700.

The measures were brought in on June 29 because of the jail overcrowding crisis in England and Wales.

More than 90 freed inmates were recalled to jail during November for alleged reoffending or failing to abide by conditions.
