Dates revealed for live TV debates

David Cameron, Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg

The first televised leaders' debate in General Election history will take place next week, Britain's major news broadcasters said.

BBC, Sky and ITV revealed the schedule for the three eagerly-awaited live debates as Gordon Brown confirmed Britain's May 6 polling date.

The first of the 90-minute sessions will be screened on ITV1 on Thursday April 15, the next by Sky on April 22 and the last by the BBC on April 29.

Members of the audience will be able to put questions to Mr Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg directly while viewers can submit their own questions in advance online or by email.

The first debate, hosted by Alastair Stewart, will be themed on domestic affairs and will take place in the north west England, a spokesman said.

The second event, presented by Adam Boulton, will be based on international affairs and take place in the South West.

The final debate, themed on economic affairs, will be moderated by David Dimbleby and will be held in the Midlands.

This General Election will be the first to feature TV debates pitching leaders of the three biggest parties against one another in front of an audience of millions.

Televised debates have been a feature of US presidential elections since 1960, but have been blocked in Britain by the failure to reach agreement between the parties.

The broadcasters drew lots to determine the order of the debates and the allocation of themes.
