Andy Murray was greeted by cheering fans today as he arrived at Downing Street for a reception with David Cameron.

The Prime Minister met the 26-year-old at the door of number 10 and applause rang out as No 10 aides and invited guests welcomed him.

The Scot, who ended Britain's 77-year wait for a male winner at the tournament, rubbed shoulders with Westminster's starstruck elite at the event.

MPs put their political differences aside as they chatted to Murray in the No 10 garden.

Mr Cameron, Labour leader Ed Miliband, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and the Scottish National Party's Westminster leader Angus Robertson listened intently to Murray, who just 24 hours earlier had claimed a historic victory.

Murray, wearing a smart navy suit, sipped from a glass of water as he chatted with the political leaders.

Mr Cameron won a new fan in the shape of Murray's mother Judy.

Asked how the Prime Minister was as she left No 10, Mrs Murray said: "Gorgeous."

The Deputy Prime Minister tweeted about his encounter with the Wimbledon winner.

Mr Clegg said: "Pleasure to meet @andy-murray today. He's a true British champion who made tennis history yesterday."

Murray left after an hour and gave a wave to waiting photographers before he was driven away from Downing St in a Mercedes.

After the reception Mr Robertson said: "I was absolutely delighted to be able to congratulate Andy Murray in person today.

"He has worked tirelessly over many years to get to the very top of tennis, and it is just fantastic to see his all hard work pay off in such grand style."
