Death crash car 'not being chased'

12 April 2012

An unmarked police car involved in a road crash in which a man died was not on an emergency call or chasing the victim's vehicle, police have said.

The 23-year-old victim's Audi saloon collided with a Vauxhall Corsa just after 9am today, leaving his passenger and two police officers hurt.

An investigation was launched by police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission after the two cars, which were travelling in opposite directions, crashed on the A632 Chesterfield Road in Matlock, Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Police confirmed that the man from Chesterfield was killed in the collision.

A spokesman said: "Derbyshire constabulary can confirm that the Audi was not the subject of any police action prior to the collision," he added.

"The police vehicle involved was being driven on routine inquiries and was not responding to any emergency."

The passenger in the Audi is being treated in hospital for leg and facial injuries. Two police officers suffered minor injuries.

The A632 Matlock to Chesterfield road runs alongside the first fairway of Matlock Golf Club.

Club member Paul Edwards was in the clubhouse at the time and said the first he knew of the crash was a car wheel bouncing across the fairway.

He said: "I saw what I thought was an umbrella blowing across because of the wind but it was literally a car wheel running across the fairway. I then saw groups of other golfers shooting up to where the accident happened. The car was very smashed up. You could not recognise what sort of car it was, it must have rolled for some way."
