Drivers may be fined up to £200 for littering even if a passenger throws rubbish from their car.

Local councils are set to be given the power to dish out £60 littering fines to drivers in a new crackdown, according to the Telegraph.

This could then be tripled if unpaid for a month, with some London boroughs already able to charge £200 for late fines.

The leaked Government document on litter strategy states ministers are frustrated by how hard it is to prosecute drivers over litter because they cannot be easily identified, the paper reported.

But under the new plan, the driver will be responsible unless they can convince the guilty passenger to cover their fine.

The document, not intended to be made public until later this year, reportedly states Britain “must act now to clean up the country and change our culture so that it is no longer acceptable to drop litter”.
