Duggan police could be quizzed by investigators

Shot dead: Mark Duggan's death sparked last August's riots
6 August 2012

police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan may finally be interrogated by investigators, it was revealed today.

Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said 11 employees involved in the operation may have “personal interviews” with the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Mr Hogan-Howe said “trust issues” between the watchdog and Scotland Yard had meant key officers were not willing to be directly questioned. He added: “All of these officers have already given statements and written answers to the IPCC.”

Mr Duggan, a 29-year-old father of four from Tottenham, was shot on 4  August last year when his taxi was stopped by armed officers. Two days later rioting broke out in Tottenham and spread across London and the country. A non-police-issue handgun was found near Mr Duggan’s body. It was reported that neither his DNA nor fingerprints have been recovered from the gun or the sock it was in.

The IPCC is due to hand a report into Mr Duggan’s death to north London coroner Andrew Walker in the autumn.

Boris Johnson today said the Olympics could help heal the wounds of the riots. The Mayor suggested the Games could inspire Londoners to “come back from adversity”.
