EU summit over recession

12 April 2012

Gordon Brown is joining other European leaders for talks as he continues to press for further concerted international action to tackle the worsening global recession.

The Prime Minister is flying to Berlin for the meeting hosted by German chancellor Angela Merkel. They will attempt to forge a common European position ahead of the G20 summit in London in April.

On Saturday, Mrs Merkel and French president Nicolas Sarkozy - who will also be at the meeting - both issued statements calling for "ambitious" measures to reform the world financial system.

Mr Brown set out his own proposals earlier in the week calling for a "grand bargain" with the countries of the world coming together to deal with a problem of global dimensions.

In a 74-page recovery plan, the Government urged nations to review their "fiscal stimulus" measures to see whether they could do more to kick start their economies, as well as action to deal with gaps in the regulatory system.

That was closely echoed by Mrs Merkel who said in her weekly podcast: "We want to make sure that in the future there are no gaps in the world regarding financial products, market participants or instruments."

Leaders from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic - which currently holds the rotating EU presidency - will also be at the meeting.
