Newsnight new boy Evan Davis was tonight crowned joint Journalist of the Year at London's European Diversity Awards.

The economist, who replaced veteran interrogator Jeremy Paxman as Newsnight host this week, shared the award with Paralympian-turned-broadcaster Ade Adepitan.

Davis, who is gay, was given the gong at a glittering ceremony at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington tonight.

The awards were established in 2010 to celebrate people and organisations with a track record in promoting equality and diversity.

BBC newsreader Jane Hill, who hosted the ceremony, said: "The European Diversity Awards recognise excellence in the areas of gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, race, culture and religion across Europe.

"They are unique in recognising all aspects of diversity across the whole of Europe and celebrate the best across both the corporate and campaigning aspects of diversity."

Davis won plaudits for his debut in the hot seat of the late night current affairs show, which brought in an extra 500,000 viewers.

He quizzed the Prime Minister on whether he would feel comfortable seeing two gay men kissing in public and imperial versus metric measurements.
