A convicted killer has been found guilty of the "truly monstrous" murder of a Lithuanian migrant worker whose body was chopped up and dumped in the sea.
Former Russian Army soldier Vitas Plytnykas, 41, suffocated Jolanta Bledaite at her flat in Brechin, Angus, last March after forcing her to give him access to her savings.
Plytnykas had already been jailed for a drugs-related knife killing in Germany, prompting Tory anger over how the murderer was able to get into Britain.
Ms Bledaite's family said Plytnykas - and 20-year-old accomplice Aleksandras Skirda - should "get what they deserve" when they are sentenced next month. And they voiced fears over potential "revenge" attacks if the killers are allowed out of jail early.
At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Pentland said Plytnykas had no respect for human decency. Plytnykas earlier denied his part in the murder, which Skirda has admitted.
They chopped up the 35-year-old victim's body and dumped the severed body parts into the sea. The victim's head and hands were found washed up on Arbroath beach by two young girls.
Skirda, also from Lithuania, pleaded guilty to murder last October and gave evidence against his accomplice.
Plytnykas was jailed for seven years and six months at a court in Stuttgart, Germany, in June 2001 for the earlier knife killing.
The jury of 10 women and five men at the Edinburgh High Court - who were unaware of past convictions - took two hours and 20 minutes to find Plytnykas guilty of five charges, including murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
Scottish Tory justice spokesman Bill Aitken said: "This is a truly tragic case, where a convicted killer is able to walk into this country with the authorities being completely unaware of his record."
