The family of a six-year-old girl who died after falling into a canal are devastated, police said today.

Officers are investigating the youngster's death, after she and two other children ended up in the water in Springfield Park, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, at about 6.20pm yesterday.

The girl was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead soon after arrival.

Superintendent Kevin Purcell, of West Mercia Police, said: "The family of the six-year-old are absolutely devastated by their loss and I would ask that their privacy is respected at this time."

The two other children are expected to make a full recovery.

The scene at the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, near Wolverley Court Lock, remains taped off today.
