Ferry checked in yacht deaths probe

12 April 2012

A P&O ferry has been examined by police investigating the deaths of three yachtsmen whose bodies were found in the English Channel.

Forensic officers from Hampshire Police's marine unit boarded the Pride of Bilbao after passengers left the ship when it docked at Portsmouth. Using a rigid inflatable boat, officers also examined the hull.

James Meaby and Rupert Saunders, both 36, from Tooting, south London, and Jason Downer, 35, from Kent, drowned off the Isle of Wight on August 20.

Mystery surrounds their deaths as no distress call was made from their 25ft yacht Ouzo, which has not yet been found.

It is believed the Sailfish sloop may have been in collision with a larger vessel.

P&O Ferries is being investigated over the disappearance of the sailing yacht after the Marine Accident Investigation Branch launched a preliminary examination into the incident and asked for the movements of all major vessels moving through the area at the time.

It approached a number of ferry companies asking for their black box voyage data recorders, which give details about where a ship is at any time.

P&O Ferries handed over the black box from the Pride of Bilbao, which is the only one of its vessels that travels in those particular waters.

Investigators have approached P&O Ferries regarding "something of interest" seen on the black box.

But a Hampshire Police spokeswoman said: "Whether or not the data from the black box is relevant to the fate of the Ouzo has yet to be established."
