Four Eton swine flu cases confirmed

12 April 2012

The number of cases of confirmed swine flu cases at Eton College has increased to four after three more were diagnosed, the Health Protection Agency has said.

Parents of pupils at the Berkshire school, which was attended by Princes William and Harry, will receive a letter from health officials confirming there are 32 suspected cases of swine flu at the school.

The news came as the UK's total number of swine flu cases reached 244, with 15 new cases including one believed to be the first confirmed in Wales.

The first case at Eton, a 13-year-old pupil, tested positive for the illness at the school on Thursday.

Now the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has written to parents confirming of a further seven probable and 25 possible cases.

Of these, three were confirmed on Sunday, bringing a total of four confirmed as positive cases at the school, said the HPA.

The school, which has been closed for half term, will remain closed until June 7.

The HPA said in the letter: "In general these students have mild illness. It is highly likely that these will be positive for Swine Influenza."

The agency is offering antiviral drugs to both pupils and staff at the school.

Boys taking public examinations at Eton are being allowed to return to do so under controlled conditions.
