The London 2012 Olympic Rings on the Eurotunnel entrance in Calais, France (Locog/PA)

A giant set of Olympic rings has been unveiled on the entrance to the Channel Tunnel in France.

The 9.4m wide and 4.6m high blue, yellow, black, green and red rings had to be transported in segments to the entrance in Coquelles near Calais.

They will be hard to miss for the hundreds of thousands of sports fans who are set to travel to the Games from Europe on Eurostar trains to St Pancras International. They can then travel to the Olympic Park on the Javelin train, which is being geared up to take 25,000 visitors per hour on the seven-minute journey to the east London venue.

Five rock climbers spent two nights installing the giant rings to a wall. Each ring is fixed to the wall with 10 anchor points to hold it in place.

London 2012's Jonathan Edwards was joined by athletes Kelly Sotherton and Lawrence Okoye for the unveiling.

London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said: "The Olympic rings are an iconic symbol, inspiring athletes and uniting people around the world.

"To athletes they represent the culmination of thousands of hours of training and reaching the highest level in sport.

"To visitors travelling from Europe they will excite and inspire them about the Olympic Games taking place in London, and demonstrate that we are ready to welcome the world in 2012."
