A giant sinkhole has opened up in a Manchester A road following hours of heavy rain in the city.

The 40ft deep hole appeared in the Mancunian Way, on a busy commuter route, near to the the Ancoats area.

Traffic stalled in both directions on Friday morning after the crater, which measures at least 15 feet, opened up between the junctions with the A6 London Road and Fairfield Street.

The road was closed in both directions, and commuters have been warned to expect weeks of traffic delays while repairs are made.

The sinkhole appeared after much of the country was battered by unseasonal heavy rains throughout today and yesterday.

Manchester - a city famed for its wet weather - was hit particularly hard by flooding today, leading to gridlocked traffic and widespread public transport cancellations.

Manchester council engineers and United Utilities have been called to the scene of the sinkhole to assess the damage.

It’s believed to have been caused by either a collapsed sewer or a culvert - a pipe which carries water underground.
