A 14-year-old girl has appeared in court charged with murdering a 45-year-old man who was accused of sexual offences.

The victim, named in reports as builder Robert Daley, was found stabbed to death at an address in Ferndale Road, Stockwell, south London, on Friday evening.

The teenage girl appeared in custody at Sutton Youth Court, and was remanded in secure accommodation with the case adjourned to May 25.

The court heard that a bail application was expected to be made at Croydon Crown Court in the next 48 hours.

The Crown Prosecution Service earlier confirmed that a man called Robert Daley had been investigated over allegations of sexual offences but the case was dropped.

A spokeswoman said: "We considered the file earlier this month but there was insufficient evidence to charge him."

Police have said the victim, who has not yet been formally identified, died from stab wounds to the chest.

An 18-year-old man was arrested earlier in connection with the death and was bailed to return in May.

The girl, dressed in a grey top and blue jeans, gazed around the courtroom from her seat in the dock where she was flanked by security guards during the 15-minute hearing.

Relatives were permitted to sit in the court and at least one was weeping.
