Glitter to fight sex offender order

12 April 2012

Paedophile singer Gary Glitter is to fight an application for an order that will require him to register as a sex offender, his solicitor told a court.

David Corker, representing the former Seventies glam rock star, told a district judge that his client claimed his conviction for abusing two young girls in Vietnam was a "travesty of justice" brought about by "unfair trial".

Mr Corker was addressing Uxbridge Magistrates' Court, in west London, at a hearing where the Metropolitan Police was applying for a notification order that requires Glitter to sign the sex offenders register just hours after he arrived back in Britain on a flight from Bangkok.

The 64-year-old, whose real name is Paul Gadd, did not attend the court hearing in person.

Rajeev Shetty, the solicitor representing the Metropolitan Police, told the court that a number of conditions needed to be satisfied for them to apply the order under Section 99 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

He said the first condition was that Gadd had been convicted of a relevant offence in a country outside the UK; also the offence took place after September 3 1997.

He added that Glitter's sentence of three years in prison would have resulted in him having to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life had it been in this country.

Mr Corker told the court that he had only been able to spend an hour with his client after meeting him at Terminal 3 this morning after he touched down in Britain.
