Google Doodle celebrates the summer solstice

As thousands celebrate the summer solstice at Stonehenge, the latest Google Doodle also honours the UK's longest day.

The animated image shows five swimmers bobbing in the sea as a wave washes over them.

The characters wear swimming caps in the search engine's colours and the last figure's snorkel represents the 'L'

The solstice takes place when the sun is at its highest point in the sky following the morning's sunrise at 4.52am and marks the peak of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

After today the days will get shorter until the winter solstice on December 21, when the days will start to get longer again.

Internet users in the Southern Hemisphere will see a different Doodle - a scarf knitted in the shape of the Google logo - celebrating the start of the winter solstice.
