Mo Farah has become the first British man to win the Great North Run since 1985 with a personal best time of one hour and one second.

The double Olympic gold medallist beat Kenyan runner Mike Kigen to win his first title on Tyneside after finishing second last year.

Both runners fought it out for much of the race but Farah pulled clear in the last 200m of the 13.1 mile course.

Steve Kenyon was the last British winner of the men’s race 29 years ago. Kenya would taste success in the women's race as Mary Keitany equalled Paula Radcliffe's course record to edge Britain's Gemma Steel into second place.

The 31-year-old told the BBC: “It feels great but I had to dig in deep out there.

“Mike kept on pushing and I just wanted to hang on in there and I knew I had the pace at the end.

"I was surprised how well he was running. I didn't think I could run that fast but it is great to finish the season with a win.

"With 200m to go I pushed but I didn't know how much I still had and as soon as I started to celebrate I saw Mike coming back at me again."
