Greg Rutherford has urged would-be runners to join Olympic and Paralympic heroes across the country taking part in park runs tomorrow.

The London 2012 long jump gold medallist, and Strictly Come Dancing star, will be among 100 of UK Sport’s National Lottery-funded athletes who are joining the 5k Parkrun events.

They will bring up the rear to ensure no one finishes last.

Rutherford, 30, said: “I’ve always been a strong advocate for getting people involved in fitness and health, and Parkrun is a really nice way to start that. When I was a Lottery-funded athlete it gave me the opportunity to train full-time and get to the level that I needed.

“It’s the same scenario for those who are funded now, it’s something that genuinely helps. We lack numbers compared to places like China and America, but what we have is a fan-tastic system of supporting athletes.”

Parkrun is a nationwide network of organised Saturday-morning free timed runs, to encourage everyone to get active. They all have a volunteer tail walker.
