Heroic members of the public armed with a fire extinguisher and a five-foot narwhal tusk chased the London Bridge terror attacker before police arrived.

Footage has emerged which shows three people surrounding the attacker, who killed two people and injured three more during the knife rampage on Friday.

Before police arrived, the brave members of the public approached the attacker wearing a fake suicide vest - now identified as convicted terrorist Usman Khan.

One man sprays him with a fire extinguisher, while another approaches and lunges at him with a narwhal tusk - thought to have been taken from the wall of Fishmongers' Hall.

A Narwhal is a medium-sized toothed whale that possesses a large "tusk", which sell for several thousands of pounds. They have also been known at the "sea unicorn".

A woman inside the building said: "A guy who was with us at Fishmongers' Hall took a 5' narwhal tusk from the wall and went out to confront the attacker.

"You can see him standing over the man (with what looks like a white pole) in the video. We were trying to help victims inside but that man's a hero."

The Times named the man who grabbed the tusk and confronted Khan as Luckasz, a chef from Poland who worked in the hall's kitchen.

His actions were hailed on social media, with one person writing: "Amazing quick thinking by that guy. It's good to see people being brave and protecting the community - doing the right thing!"

Another said: "These guys are absolutely amazing. They were just random people who took upon themselves to protect the rest of us."

On Friday, the members of the public who ran towards the terror suspect were praised for their "breath-taking heroism".

Speaking about the response to the attack, London Mayor Sadiq Khan commended those involved as "the best of us".

"What's remarkable about the images we've seen is the breath-taking heroism of members of the public who literally ran towards danger not knowing what confronted them," he said.

"They really are the best of us, another example of the bravery and heroism of ordinary Londoners.

"I want to say thank you to them on behalf of all Londoners."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson added: "I want to thank the emergency services and members of the public for their immense bravery in responding to this suspected terrorist attack at London Bridge.

"This is an appalling incident and all my thoughts are with the victims and their families."

Speaking after a briefing from the Met Police, Mr Johnson further commended the "extraordinary bravery of those members of the public who physically intervened".
