Hot news - more sunshine is coming

12 April 2012

Much of the UK is expected to bask in glorious sunshine on Monday as the hot spell continues.

The seaside town of Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire boasted the hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury creeping up to almost 27C on Sunday.

There were highs of more than 25C in London as the UK enjoyed wall-to-wall sunshine.

A similar pattern is expected on Monday before temperatures start to slip back later in the week.

A spokesman for MeteoGroup said: "We had the hottest day of the year so far in Lee-on-Solent, with a high of 26.9C being recorded. Other high temperatures included 25.6C recorded at Heathrow Airport."

Patchy cloud will build over both northernmost Scotland and southernmost counties of England on Monday, threatening the odd isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm.

It will be very warm in many areas but cooler along eastern coasts due to an onshore breeze.

Last month was officially the sunniest May for eight years in some parts of the UK.

MeteoGroup released its monthly review which found England and Wales had basked in above average levels of sunshine.

The sunniest place was tiny Fair Isle, lying between Orkney and Shetland, which saw 279 hours of sunshine in total.
