The UK is facing a cost of living crisis with energy bills soaring, along with inflation and petrol prices reaching record highs.

Brits have seen the prices for household goods soaring and many were astounded to see tubs of Lurpak butter selling for £9 per pack. In Iceland, the product cost £9.35 for a kilogram, while a 750g tub was £7.25.

With many struggling to keep up with rising prices, people on social media have begun to share money-saving hacks and tips.

Now, a TikTok trend has seen users going viral for making generous amounts of butter using a simple ingredient that costs less than £1. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to make butter for less than £1 using double cream TikTok hack

TikTok users have been using double cream, which you can buy for as little as 99 pence from Tesco and other supermarkets. You’ll also need a wide-rimmed plastic bottle, a hand mixer or a stand mixer, and some elbow grease.

To make butter at home using the savvy TikTok hack and a bottle, follow these steps:

  1. Pour your double cream into a plastic bottle with a wide rim – many have used a protein shaker or smoothie blending bottle
  2. Close the lid securely to avoid spillages and begin shaking the bottle vigorously
  3. The cream will go through several stages until it becomes butter. It’ll initially start to curdle and get harder, but you need to keep shaking
  4. Once there is a blend of a milky-looking liquid (buttermilk) and a fairly solid yellow-hued slab of butter, you’re almost there
  5. Strain the buttermilk out, but preserve it to make pancakes, cakes or friend chicken batter
  6. Remove the slab of butter and rinse it in a bowl of water with ice cubes (you may need to do this a few times), or under the tap with cold water
  7. Keep rinsing the butter and bring the slab together, collecting any parts that break off in the water and blend them with the main blob
  8. Once the water is fairly clear and there is no more milk coming from the butter, gather the butter slab and place it in a container. Store it in the fridge

To make butter at home using the TikTok hack and a hand or stand mixer, follow these steps:

  1. Pour the cream into a large and deep bowl if you’re using a hand mixer, or into the mixing bowl of your stand mixer
  2. Turn the mixer on and start on a slower speed to avoid the cream splattering and spilling out of the bowl
  3. Gradually speed up the mixer as the mixture thickens
  4. Keep mixing until the buttermilk and solid butter begin to seperate. The butter should mostly be clumped around the prongs of your mixer
  5. Remove all the butter and rinse as per the instructions in steps 6 and 7 above
  6. Gather the butter slab and place it in a container. Store in the fridge

You can keep your butter simple by adding some salt when spreading it onto your toast or bread, or you can get creative and add garlic, herbs and other ingredients as the mixture begins to thicken.
