A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the fatal stabbing of a law student in Walthamstow.

Hussain Chaudry was stabbed in the neck as he fought to protect his mother from knifemen trying to steal a designer coat on Wednesday evening.

An 18-year-old has been arrested and remains in custody.

Police were called at approximately 5.20pm on Wednesday, 17 March to reports of a stabbing on Lea Bridge Road.

Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service.

Mr Chaudry was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination gave Mr Chaudhry’s cause of death as hypovolemic shock and a stab wound to the neck.

Two of Mr Chaudry’s relatives – a man in his 20s and a woman in her 40s - were found with slash injuries to their hands and were taken to an east London hospital for treatment. The woman remains in hospital but the man has since been discharged.

Mr Chaudry’s family, said: “We are deeply grieved by the loss of our beloved Hussain and respectfully ask for the privacy and space to come to terms with this tragic situation. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their kindness, compassion, condolences, prayers and goodwill. We have no other comment at this time.”

His sister, Afia Ahmed Chaudhry tweeted: "Look at you, baby. Your name is being uttered across the world. You were perfect, & you are finally home. I love you.”

A family friend revealed that Mr Chaudry was trying to comfort his mother as he lay in her lap dying, writing on Twitter: “Hussain was a lion. He said ‘don’t worry mum - just call an ambulance’ and then he looked up to the heavens peacefully and said his Shahada [One of the 5 Pillars a prayer considered the most sacred in Islam].”

“He was a good boy. He prayed all his salah and was close to his family. He was studying law at SOAS University. His family are such decent kind people who always welcome others into their home.”

Detective Chief Inspector Perry Benton, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said: "A young man has lost his life in tragic circumstances and my thoughts remain with his family and friends at this awful time.

“I am continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward and speak with my team. Any piece of information could prove to be vital.”

He added that additional officers will be in the area over the coming days to “help reassure the community and listen to concerns from residents.”
