Illegal immigrants found in lorry

12 April 2012

A group of illegal immigrants were caught trying to smuggle themselves into the UK inside a lorry full of baby food, it has been revealed.

The six stowed themselves away in a Hungarian registered lorry which was stopped on the morning of July 16 in Calais by Border Agency officials.

The stowaways were discovered when officers checked the lorry with a carbon dioxide probe which showed an elevated reading, indicating people were inside.

Six Afghan men were found hiding amongst the load of baby food.

Officers believe they cut their way in through the roof of the trailer.

The lorry was en route from Germany to Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, but was stopped before it could board a ferry across the channel.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said: "We have hundreds of UK Border Agency officers based at ports in France and Belgium, carrying out checks to stop illegal immigrants before they get to the UK.

"As well as carbon dioxide detectors, which helped us find these would-be illegal entrants, we also use heart beat detectors and sniffer dogs to find stowaways trying to get into the UK illegally."

The men were handed over to the French authorities.
