Immigrants face 'Britishness' test

12 April 2012

Immigrants who want to live in Britain permanently, but not take out citizenship, will be forced to take a "Britishness test" from next year, it has been announced.

Foreigners will have to prove proficiency in the English language and sit a version of the "Life in the UK" exam.

The requirements have applied to immigrants who want to become British citizens since July 2004.

Now they will be extended to foreigners wishing to settle permanently in Britain but not necessarily take on citizenship, beginning on April 2.

Last year 180,000 people were granted settlement to stay in the country.

Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said: "It is essential that migrants wishing to live in the UK permanently recognise that there are responsibilities that go with this.

"Having a good grasp of English is essential in order for them to play a full role in society and properly integrate into our communities."

Applicants who already possess a good standard of English will take the existing "Life in the UK" exam.

Applicants with poorer English can take a specially developed English for Speakers of Other Languages course with a simplified citizenship course.
