More hospitals are set to be investigated as part of inquiries into abuse carried out by Jimmy Savile.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said new information had come to light suggesting the late DJ may have struck at more NHS institutions than the 13 already known about.

He has asked police to review all of the evidence before any relevant information is passed on to investigators “as quickly as possible”.

The inquiry is currently focused on Broadmoor, Stoke Mandeville and Leeds General hospitals, as well as a further 10 trusts.

Mr Hunt said any further hospitals involved would be named once the review of the new potential evidence had been completed.

In a statement to Parliament, he said: “It is vital that the final NHS investigation reports are thorough and complete.”

The final reports of the current investigations into Savile’s abuse on NHS premises are now expected to be finished by next June.

Mr Hunt said: “Although all 13 investigations are currently on track, this additional material means that the timetable will be affected.”

Liz Dux, of Slater & Gordon Lawyers, who is representing 72 alleged victims of Savile, said : “The level of abuse and the extent of it, in particular how much those at these various organisations knew about what was going on, will be damning.”
