Jimmy Savile revealed he was having sex with under-age girls before he was a household name, it was claimed today.

A former acquaintance of the TV and radio host said Savile made the remarks when he was a dance hall manager in Leeds in the early Sixties.

Patrick Skinner, 82, said: “At one point we were standing on a balcony overlooking the dance floor where there were several hundred young girls gyrating to the music. I commented on it being ‘quite a sight’ and Jimmy replied ‘Aye, I’ve shafted more than 75 per cent of them.’” He added: “The hall was full of girls as young as 14.”

Up to 10 women have alleged that the Top of the Pops presenter sexually abused them. The claims will feature on an ITV documentary tomorrow. After Savile died last October journalists on Newsnight are understood to have interviewed alleged victims. The BBC said the piece was not broadcast because the story “could not be substantiated” but is facing pressure to order an inquiry.
