JK Rowling has vowed to keep writing — even though she will “never top Harry Potter”.

The author said she had realised more than a decade ago, before she had even written the final book, that she could not surpass the worldwide success of the best-selling series.

But she said the fortune she had amassed from it was “incredibly marvellous and liberating”.

In an interview with Sky News about her children’s charity Lumos, Rowling said: “As far back as 2000 I knew perfectly well that I would never top Harry Potter. I knew before the series ended.”

She said this left her with two options: “You can think ‘oh no, how dreadful; I’ll never, ever top that’.

“Or you can say ‘how incredibly marvellous and liberating that I made money beyond my wildest dreams and I can affect issues I really care about’.”

“But what do I love doing? I love writing, so clearly I’m going to continue to write,” she added.
