Judge who called sex abuse victim, 13, 'predatory' gives paedophile longer sentence

12 August 2013

The judge in the “predatory” sex abuse victim controversy today increased his sentence on the paedophile — but only on a technicality.

Neil Wilson, 41, remains free as his suspended sentence was only raised from eight months to 12 months.

Judge Nigel Peters made no mention of the outcry his remarks had caused during a 10-minute hearing today at Snaresbrook crown court.

Wilson appeared on a video link from York where he now lives. But original prosecutor Robert Colver was replaced by another barrister after his suspension from sex offence cases pending an inquiry by the Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer.

Mr Colver described the 13-year-old victim as “a predator in all her actions and sexually experienced” when Wilson had pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual activity with a child and two charges of making indecent photographs.

He lured the girl to his Romford home where she stripped out of her school uniform before performing a sex act on him. The judge refused to jail Wilson and also said the victim had been “predatory and egged you on.”

Today the judge said he was not changing the eight-month suspended sentence for the child sex offence but he imposed four-month suspended sentences on the two indecent photographs charges and on other charges of possessing extreme pornographic imagery.

He also imposed a two-year supervision order including a sex offenders treatment programme.
