The leader of the council linked to the Grenfell Tower disaster has broken her leg.

Elizabeth Campbell was travelling between two meetings in central London when she lost her balance in a doorway on Monday morning.

It is understood she suffered a spiral fracture, breaking her leg in two places.

A spokesman for Kensington and Chelsea Council said: "Ms Campbell is determined to get back into the office as soon as possible.

"She will continue to work on issues remotely for now, and is likely to be in hospital overnight."

The Tory councillor had made various media appearances at the start of a busy week for those concerned with the tragedy, which left 71 dead in June.

She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the council had an "army of people out there working 24 hours a day" to get survivors rehoused.

More than 100 households from the west London block are still in hotels, two weeks away from Christmas, prompting widespread criticism of the council.

Ms Campbell also revealed on Sunday that she would not attend a memorial to mark six months since the fire, due to be held on Thursday.

Her decision came after bereaved families requested the council did not go to the ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral in any official capacity.

She said: "The service isn't about me, it's for the people who lost everything on that terrible night six months ago, and it is in memory of those who tragically lost their lives."
