London is set to bask in a mini-heatwave today as temperatures soar after a week of washouts.

The capital is expected to see highs of 20C on Sunday, allowing Londoners to enjoy a brief dry spell and warmer weather after a week of rain and windy conditions.

The city will turn brighter this afternoon with some sunshine and pleasantly warm conditions, the Met Office said,  before light rain is expected this evening.

Meanwhile, there will be a mixture of sunny spells and showers across the country with parts of eastern, central and southern England being fairly cloudy.

The weather is expected to be warm until the evening, especially in the east and southeast.

The beginning of next week will be similar with sunny spells.

However, the Met Office has warned of heavy showers at times "with a risk of thunderstorms."

A spokesperson said Monday to Wednesday would be “generally unsettled with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, as well as some more prolonged periods of rain”.

"Some heavy bursts likely at times with a risk of thunderstorms,” they added.

Saturday saw gales and torrential rain across the country as a week’s worth of rain fell in 24 hours in some areas.

Brecon Beacons in South Wales saw 125 mm of rain and The Environment Agency issued a flood alert as two rivers in the Midlands rose following a night of heavy rain.

With more rain forecast, the Environment Agency said people should check the “alert” website frequently, just in case.
