The M23 has reopened in West Sussex after a multiple car pile up near Gatwick Airport on Friday evening.

Around 15 vehicles were involved in the incident between the southbound junctions 10 and 11 around 5.40pm which led to six people being taken to hospital.

An additional 34 people were treated at the scene by medics on the motorway stretch between the airport and the turn off for Crawley.

Sussex Police said that none of those taken in had life-threatening injuries and that the road had reopened by the early hours of Saturday.

A tweet from the force at 9.24pm on Friday night urged motorists to avoid the area.

This read: “The southbound carriageway of the M23 has reopened after a collision involving multiple vehicles.

“Junctions 10 and 11 northbound remain closed. Around 34 people are being treated by the ambulance service, with no life-threatening injuries.

“Please continue to avoid the area.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service added: “Following the multi-vehicle RTC on the M23 this evening, we have taken four patients to hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

“A further approximately 30 patients are being assessed for minor injuries and will be taken to hospital or discharged from our care.”
