A section of the M4 was today closed after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a lorry in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to the motorway's London-bound carriageway between junctions 11 and 12 just before 3am after the incident.

A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman confirmed the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

She said: “It is believed the lorry driver is uninjured but is suffering from shock.”

The spokeswoman added that the gender and the age of the victim were not known at this time.

The eastbound carriageway has been closed between junctions 11 and 10 while the incident is being investigated.

A lane of the westbound carriageway has also been closed.

A Highways England spokeswoman said the road will not reopen until at least 9am.

Highways England has advised motorists to exit the road at junction 11 and follow the hollow circle symbol on local signs via the B3270 to Winnersh, A329 and A329(M) to re-join M4 at junction 10.
