Man admits digger rampage

12 April 2012

A 53-year-old man who demolished a house with a mechanical digger is facing a lengthy jail term after admitting destroying property.

Digger driver Robert Taylor, of no fixed address, was arrested after attacking the house in Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex, in June.

During a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, he admitted destroying the house and being reckless as to whether life was endangered, destroying or damaging two cars and a police car and assaulting a policeman. Sentencing was adjourned until October for a psychiatric report.

The demolished house was owned by James Harvard and Janice Gledhill, who also owned a nearby caravan park. Taylor lived in a caravan on the park.

No details of the attack or the reasons behind it were given in court, but it is thought to have been centred on a dispute over money.

At the time of the attack, police said the house had been "destroyed".

They said they were called to a caravan park by concerned members of the public.

Taylor had then used the 14-ton digger to attack a police car which had two officers inside.

Mr Harvard, 47, said his partner Ms Gledhill, 54, was alone in the house when it was attacked.

Ms Gledhill welcomed the guilty pleas.
