A man and a young child have died in a car crash on Christmas Day.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the A421 on the outskirts of Bedford at 11.10pm, Bedfordshire Police said.

The child was airlifted to hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.

A woman who was also in the car was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, with serious injuries.

Officers said all three occupants of the car were from Bedfordshire.

Sergeant Simon Goldsmith said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to call police.

"Any death on the road is tragic but this incident is even more poignant given the day it occurred.

"Next of kin have been informed and our specialist family liaison officers are providing support to relatives."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
